Did You See This?

D.C. wants to double its 24 miles of protected bike lanes. It plans to start with 10 miles this year (Washington Post) – Thanks to folks like you speaking up, writing in, and working hard on campaigns for better streets across the city, DDOT has committed to building out 10 new miles of protected bike lanes in 2022 and 2023 each. See the map in the article for some exciting transformations in the pipeline.

D.C. will add bike lanes, remove reversible travel lanes on busy Connecticut Ave. NW (Washington Post) – After 2 years of work, Mayor Bowser announced that the community-preferred design for Connecticut Ave is moving forward with fewer driving lanes, protected bike lanes, and dramatically safer intersections. Join us in thanking Mayor Bowser for putting people first on Connecticut Ave.

What We’re Reading

D.C. traffic deaths at 14-year high with low-income areas hardest hit (Washington Post) – a look back at eight years of crashes on DC streets shows an alarming pattern of traffic violence and loss concentrated most in lower income neighborhoods and east of the Anacostia River. Click through the maps and tables to see for yourself.

The Rise and Fall of a Safer 8th St. (GGWash) – This project to fill a half-mile of the Met Branch Trail and improve street safety around 4 charter schools inexplicably came off the rails last year, but needs to get back on track.
