Let’s put a park on Little Falls Parkway AND boost roadway safety!

This action is no longer active. Please visit our action center for current actions you can take.

Montgomery Parks has trialed reconfiguring Little Falls Parkway with two recreation lanes and two traffic lanes. MoCo Parks reports, “results of multiple traffic studies show that the reconfigured lane set-up reduces cut-through traffic in neighborhoods surrounding Little Falls Parkway, maintains a safe Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) crossing, and safely accommodates vehicle traffic.” The trial has been a success.

Please tell the Montgomery County Planning Board and Montgomery Parks that you support creating a “linear park” in the repurposed lanes.

The Little Falls Parkway pilot project addresses concerns with cut-through traffic in adjacent neighborhoods while retaining space for recreation on the parkway. The current configuration serves as a 24/7 open parkway, with two of the four lanes open for recreation and the other two lanes open to vehicular traffic.

This arrangement works well! Montgomery Parks reports “results of multiple traffic studies show that the reconfigured lane set-up reduces cut-through traffic in neighborhoods surrounding Little Falls Parkway, maintains a safe Capital Crescent Trail (CCT) crossing, and safely accommodates vehicle traffic.” Learn more at the Little Falls Parkway pilot project webpage, and check out the recording of a February 15, 2023 public meeting if you wish.

We’re encouraged! Next step is a March 30 Montgomery County Planning Board hearing that will be followed by Planning Board discussion at a later date and a decision whether to proceed with the creation of a “linear park” in the recreation-repurposed roadway lanes.

You can help ensure a favorable outcome by using our action to send a message to the Planning Board and to Montgomery Parks. Speaking out now will make a difference in efforts to boost roadway safety and expand recreation opportunities for Montgomery County residents.
