Walk Audit Demonstration: Join a safety walk on 11th St NW

Monday, September 30, 2024, 6:00 PM

Columbia Heights Metro Station

Meetup

Kick off the Week Without Driving with a walking tour on 11th St NW to assess safety, accessibility, and comfort for all road users.

Join the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, members of the ANC Vision Zero Caucus, and other community members for a walk audit demonstration along 11th St NW.

A walk audit, or safety walk, is an assessment of the safety, accessibility, and comfort of a particular area. During a walk audit, participants are encouraged to point out and document specific issues in need of improvement. Anyone can conduct and organize a walk audit.

We’re kicking off the DC Week Without Driving with this walk audit demonstration to help others feel more prepared to host these events themselves. The Week Without Driving challenges those with the option to drive to learn firsthand the challenges that nondrivers face to help build more accessible, inclusive communities for all.

RSVP for the walk audit demonstration.

Run of Show:

6:00pm: Meet up at the Columbia Heights Metro Station (Northeast corner of 14th St NW and Irving St NW)

6:10pm: Begin walking tour: Participants will head West on Irving St NW, turn right onto 11th St NW, and continue to the south until Clifton St (as time allows) before looping back to the starting location.

7:15pm: Return to the Columbia Heights Metro Station

Route Overview: Participants will walk or roll from 14th St NW and Irving St NW to 11th St NW and go out and back a few blocks before returning. We will move at a casual pace and plan to stop often to examine intersections, street and sidewalk conditions, and to discuss. Expected total distance: 1.2 miles.

Participation Overview: Please be prepared to walk or roll about a mile (1.2 miles) at a conversational pace with regular breaks. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring water if needed.

WABA will review resources from America Walks, AARP, Safe Routes to School, and others, and also look forward to hearing from you about what resources and practices you’ve found helpful when hosting your own walk audits.
