Books and bikes! Join folks from Women & Bicycles for a ride down Sligo Creek Trail to the Hyattsville location of Vigilante. We’ll explore the trail and then enjoy sitting inside and talking about Ride the Revolution (nonfiction) edited by Suze Clemitson.

Additional Details:

We’re riding for about 45 minutes from Silver Spring to Hyattsville. This is designed as a one-way ride but we will have maps and Metro suggestions for getting you back to wherever you wish to go! 

Please bring a bike lock for Vigilante and money is you wish to purchase coffee or food. Helmets are required by our insurance for all WABA rides. (Don’t have one? Email us for a loaner.) Please bring water and enough layers to keep you warm for the ride. 

Getting there: Silver Spring Metro is a Metro stop! It is also close to the Metropolitan Branch Trail – exact routing is dependent on Purple Line construction. Want to join us directly at Vigilante? We’ll be rolling in about 11am!

Women & Bicycles: Darning for an Active Lifestyle

As a part of WABA’s Women and Bicycles program, this event is only open to anyone who identifies as women/trans/femme. Not you? Lots of other WABA events at waba.org/fun. Know someone who should come? Please share this event with them! 

Biking can ask a lot of our clothes and many issues or damage can be fixed with a little bit of time and a few supplies. Darning is a great way to honor the resources and time that went into making the item, use less resources, keep beloved items useful, and use our money and time for other choices and needs.

Ursula is bringing her personal mending studio, a whole lot of examples (socks, sweaters and more!), and we will learn-by-doing to keep our clothes and gear lasting longer this open working session!

Issues that can be fixed: Holes in socks, sweaters or other knitted materials, places where weaving new material to cover the hole is an appropriate solution to the damage. Wool socks are a classic item to darn. 

Issues that cannot be fixed: Completely shattered or destroyed material, anything that is dirty, anything that needs to be fixed with other sewing techniques (some basic mending tutorials here). 

We are going to start right on time so that everyone can learn at the same time. Please bring a sweater/sock/other item that needs darning (preferably one of them with a hole the size of a quarter or less – bigger holes can take a lot of time!) and something to stabilize the item as your work such as a darning mushroom or tennis ball (see this basic tutorial for design intent and other ideas). 

There is limited time – Ursula can advise on larger or more complicated projects, and has some resources for other options but we do not expect that 2 hours is enough time to learn and fix everything! Small holes are fixable during the workshop, but you may have to purchase needles or additional materials if you do not finish during the workshop. 

We will have: yard and thread (limited thicknesses, materials and colors), some needles, a few darning mushrooms.  

Additional Details: 

Know how to do some darning? Please come either to work on your projects, support others and/or learn something. If you have supplies to share, we would appreciate you bringing them! Please keep in mind that what works for you may not work for everyone, there are a lot of different techniques, and unsolicited advice can feel unwelcoming and condescending. Please come in the spirit of solidarity and communal problem solving.

We will have some snacks to share but feel free to bring food (either to share or just for you). Do keep in mind that darning involves lots of hand contact with your project so messy/oily foods are challenging. 

Want to start before the workshop? A basic darning technique here and DC Public Library books on mending, including darning, here (my favourite is Mend It Better).   

Getting to WABA HQ: The office is halfway between the Columbia Heights and Woodley Park Metro stations, and close to many bus lines. There is plenty of bicycle parking in the office. There is very limited car parking on the street.

Women & Bicycles: Winter Riding Workshop with Pie!

As a part of WABA’s Women and Bicycles program, this event is only open to anyone who identifies as women/trans/femme. Not you? Lots of other WABA events at waba.org/fun. Know someone who should come? Please share this event with them!

Curious about how to keep riding through the winter? Currently riding outside but unsure how in the heck to keep doing it in February when it is really cold? Have some great tips learned from experience or wisdom from others? In partnership with BikeArlington, we’re gathering to talk though some options to keep riding outside safe and pleasant when its cold! We’re going for a short ride in Arlington, cover some winter riding tips and tricks for you and your bicycle, and then go find pie to celebrate!*

We are meeting at Arlington Central Library (1015 N Quincy St) and will bike to Acme Pie to celebrate!

10:00 – 10:40 am: Winter clothes and gear tips and tricks (if you have any favorites, please bring them for show and tell!)

10:40 – 11:20 am: How to maintain your bike in winter (by Evelyn Murcia, Phoenix Bikes mechanic)

11:30 am: Go to pie! 

*pie is guaranteed, we know exactly where it is 🙂

Additional Details:

We will go over some common options for warmth, technical specifications about how bodies stay warm and the various properties of fabric and design that influence warmth, with a focus on using existing stuff you might have or smart ways to find what you need.

Event Ground Rules:

  • We are going to start with laying a general overview of common options, share tips and tricks from the community (have a thought to share? Feedback survey here) and have lots of demonstration solutions.
  • If you are comfortable riding in the winter, we would love you to come. Please keep in mind that what works for you may not work for everyone, and unsolicited advice can feel unwelcoming and condescending. Please come in the spirit of solidarity and communal problem solving.

Please bring a lock for library and pie parking. Women & Bicycles will pay for one pie slice each but if you wish to purchase anything else, please bring money. Please bring water for the ride, enough layers to keep you warm and helmets are required by our insurance. (Don’t have a helmet? Email us for a loaner)

Women & Bicycles: Learning About Nachotchtank Lands

Join Women & Bicycles for a morning outside! To honor Native American Heritage Month, we are riding to some of the known sites of the Nachotchtank nation before heading to the National Museum of the American Indian.

Additional Details:
The ride will be at a social, no-drop pace and about an hour of riding with lots of stops on mostly trail with some road riding. We are meeting at First and East Capitol St SE and ending close by at the National Museum of the American Indian. Please bring enough water, snacks and weather appropriate clothing to keep you going – we will be outside until the play at 11:30 am. Also, please bring a bike lock to secure your bike at the Smithsonian and helmets are required by our insurance. (Don’t have a helmet? Email us for a loaner.)

Safe Streets for Ward 5 Monthly Meetup

Safe Streets for Ward 5 is a group of neighbors working together for safer streets and more options for getting around the ward by foot and bike. Join us at our next monthly meeting and get involved!

You don’t need to ride a bike, you don’t need to be a traffic engineer, and you don’t need to be political. No matter your schedule and no matter your background, you have a role to play in winning safe streets across DC. We hope you can join us!

Ward 8 Community Ride: Oxon Run Trail to Mt. Vernon Trail

UPDATE: This ride was rescheduled due to weather. The new date is November 3rd, 2019. We hope you can still join us!

Join us for a bike ride from Congress Heights Metro Station to Old Town Alexandria. We’ll ride down Oxon Run Trail, through Oxon Hill Farm, and over the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to Alexandria! 

This is a leisurely paced, no-drop ride which means we’ll all stick together! The route is about 10 miles. We’ll also be walking some hills if we need to. We plan to talk about routes and highlight trail connections along the way. A plus? Finding good cycling friends, too! 

Bring money with you to enjoy coffee or ice cream in Old Town Alexandria (optional fun!) Or, bring a snack from home.

Helmets are required on this ride. 

Note: This ride starts at Congress Heights Metro Station and ends at Waterfront Park in Old Town, Alexandria. There are options to ride with a ride leader on the Mt. Vernon Trail to 14th Street Bridge and back to Congress Heights. We’ll be close to the King Street Metro Station and Braddock Road Metro Station to return as well.
