Celebrating the holidays together, apart.

Digital card design by Tessla Wilson, Business Partnerships Coordinator

Holiday greetings from my dining room table! In any other year we’d be setting up bike parking and stringing twinkly lights across a bar right about now, welcoming WABA members to our annual holiday party. We’d celebrate our 2020 wins and raise a glass to 2021 together.

You know how the rest of this goes — we’re staying home this year. But at least one thing is the same: we’re still so grateful for your support and this community and consider ourselves so lucky to have people like you pushing us to work harder for better bicycling so everyone can enjoy their perfect ride. Thank you.

If you’d like to raise a toast together in spirit, check out the holiday cocktail/mocktail recipes below. Here’s  to 2021! We can’t wait until it’s safe for us all to ride bikes together again.

The WABA 72

A WABA staff holiday twist on a classic cocktail.

(Keep scrolling for an alcohol-free version!)

  • 1 ounce cranberry simple syrup (recipe below!)
  • 1 ounce triple sec
  • 1.5 ounces gin
  • Sparkling wine, to top
  • Orange peel, for garnish (optional, but a nice addition if you’re feelin’ fancy!)

Makes one cocktail.

Cranberry simple syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups cranberries (fresh or frozen)

Makes plenty—keep extra in the fridge and use over the next 3-4 weeks.

First, make the simple syrup!

  • In a medium saucepan, bring  cranberries, sugar, and water to a simmer over medium.
  • Reduce heat to medium-low and cook until cranberries are tender but haven’t burst, 10 minutes.
  • Let cool, then strain through a fine-mesh sieve. Discard cranberries.

Once your simple syrup has cooled, make your cocktail! (Make more than 1 at once by scaling up the recipe.)

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Pour in the gin, triple sec, and cranberry simple syrup. Stir about 20 seconds.
  • Strain the liquid into flutes or coupe glasses and top with sparkling wine.
  • Twist orange peel and garnish your glass.
  • Enjoy this drink while it’s cold!

The WABA 72 Mocktail

A WABA twist on a classic beverage, without alcohol

  • ¼ cup cranberry simple syrup (recipe below!)
  • ¼ cup orange juice (fresh squeezed is best, but from a bottle will do just fine!)
  • Seltzer water
  • Orange peel, for garnish (optional, but a nice addition if you’re feelin’ fancy!)

Makes one mocktail

Cranberry simple syrup:

Introducing…pay-what-you-can membership

As WABA continues to grow, so does our ability to engage with our supporters — you! We want anyone to be able to join our community, regardless of their financial resources. And, we want to be better able to celebrate the people who dig deep and give generously to WABA. With that, we are proud to introduce our new pay-what-you-can membership model

Here’s what that means: if you give to WABA, we’ll count you as a member and show up for (and with!) you in the offices of our elected officials, on our trails, and as we fight for every mile of a great place to ride a bike.

It also means more ways to show your WABA pride and more ways to get involved. Take a look at all this good stuff!

*Paying your membership dues monthly helps keep WABA financially sound throughout the year and helps us better plan for future campaigns and projects. When you make a monthly payment to WABA, we never ask for an additional gift and your membership never expires for the duration of your gift. If you prefer to pay your dues annually, your membership will expire one year after the gift date.

Does this change my current membership status?

No. If you’re a WABA member, you’ll remain a current member in good standing until your membership expires. If we goofed, we’ll fix it — let us know at membership@waba.org (Thank you in advance for your patience as we push our database to new limits!).

What if I’m…

An auto-renewing member: You’ll continue with your auto-renewing dues at the same amount until you change the amount or cancel (email me to do either). If you start a new recurring gift, you will have the option to designate it towards membership or full tax-deductibility.

A two-year member: Your two-year membership will remain current until your membership expiration. We won’t offer two-year membership moving forward, but setting up a recurring gift makes it easy to keep your membership current for keeps.

A Life member: You remain a Life member and will receive Classic membership benefits. If you donate any amount, your Life membership will override any new membership level.

A family member: You’ll remain a family member through your current membership’s expiration. Family membership will be incorporated into the new membership tiers next month. We’ll have the ability to add an additional adult and up to four children to the primary member’s membership at a reduced cost.

A donor through a third party: If you give to WABA through your workplace or a donor-advised fund, we will finally be able to capture your membership through these third party gifts. Depending on the size of your gift, we will provide a Digital or Classic membership.

Tax Deductibility:

When you sign up, you’ll have the option to choose a fully tax-deductible gift (no physical benefits, but lots of good feelings) or if you want to receive all the goodies at that level. If you choose to have your gift include membership benefits, a certain amount at each level will be tax-deductible, which we’ll note in your confirmation email. If you choose full tax-deductibility, we’ll count you as a Digital member.

If you have questions, comments, thoughts, drop us a line at membership@waba.org. If you’re ready to sign up, head on over to waba.org/join

It’s the Membership Drive!

Oh no! The 2019 Membership drive is over! Click here to join WABA.

It’s Membership Drive Week here at WABA! That means we’re celebrating our passionate and dedicated members and the power we build when we come together and invest in WABA’s vision for a healthier, more livable region for everyone, especially for our future generations.

What if our region celebrated bicycling every day? If our leaders chose making green spaces a priority over highways? Or if having the freedom to choose an affordable, eco-friendly, and safe form of transportation was a right, not a privilege? We want to live in a region in which everyone, no matter their skill or comfort level, can easily get where they want to go.

For this week only, grab our Membership drive “Climate Change is real. Build more bike lanes.” shirt when you join.

Listening to and serving our members is at the core of everything we do. From training advocates to teaching people of all ages to ride a bike to identifying how to make streets safer for everyone, we couldn’t possibly do what we do without our members – become one today!

Want to learn more? Come say hi to us this week!

Happy hour on Wednesday – On Wednesday, we’ll be at Highline RxR in Crystal City from 6 – 8pm – join us on your commute home! Accessible via the Mt Vernon Trail and the Yellow Line.

Trail clean up on Saturday – Invest in the places we ride and make our shared trails better. Join us for a Saturday trail cleanup on Kingman Island! More details here.

Bike Shop Benefits for WABA Members!

Every day, WABA members directly support a happier, healthier, better connected region. Along with 6,200 of your neighbors, you provide the single largest source of unrestricted revenue for WABA—contributions that are absolutely essential to do the advocacy work that makes our region a better place to live and bike. Thank you. We are proud to have your support, and work every day to make you a proud WABA member.

Last fall, WABA launched our Member Extras program to give you another reason to be a proud card-carrying WABA member. Member Extras are perks for WABA members provided by WABA business members that share your values.

What’s the new deal?

In addition to discounts at some of your favorite coffee shops, breweries, design companies, and more, we partner with a number of local bike shops. As of January 2019, local bike shops no longer offer WABA members discounts on merchandise at their stores.

WABA bike shop business members now offer WABA members $15 off a tune-up annually—that’s $15 off a tune-up at any of our participating bike shop member locations every time you renew your membership!

How do I get one?

Look for the “$15 off a tune-up” coupon in the mail each time you renew your membership. (You can always renew early, and we’ll extend your membership another year.) Take the coupon to any of the participating shops for service. Don’t see your shop on the list? Have them email business@waba.org, or give us a call at 202-518-0524 x 211.

If you’re a long-time WABA member, you may be wondering, why no more year-round discount for WABA members at local shops? We want our shops to stay around and grow with the bicycling community for years to come—read more about our decision to update how WABA supports local bike shops below.

Why this change?

After extensive review of the previous discount program and many interviews with shop owners, we learned that the program was actually hurting our local shops and their bottom line. The 5%-10% discounts WABA members received at local shops were cutting into profit margins and not bringing new foot traffic to shops. At the same time, the discounts didn’t have a direct impact on WABA and our mission.

To create a truly bikeable region, WABA wants to support our local bike shops, promote their incredible service and expertise, and celebrate local businesses.

What does the change mean for local bike shops?

WABA bike shop business members work with us to connect our members, their customers, and employees with local and regional advocacy initiatives and support community rides and events.

We hope playing our part to support the businesses that support us means that everyone, regardless of age or ability, can experience the joy of biking.

Thank you for growing with us, and continuing to support the shops who support us!

For any further questions about WABA’s Member Extra program, please email business@waba.org, or give us a call at 202-518-0524 x 211.

Family Memberships are here!

We’re so excited to announce a new level of membership for WABA: Family Membership! WABA had a family membership option until 2013, which we had to discontinue because our database couldn’t support it. We are so excited that it’s back and refreshed to celebrate all kinds of families!

sign up

As WABA continues to grow, so do you and what you want from membership. We want Family Membership to encourage and celebrate our members who want to share WABA with family, chosen family, and the people you love most.

Here’s how it works:

$65 – 1 Year membership for two people

  • $15/person for up to four additional people
  • Children under 18 are included at no additional cost

Join here!

What do you mean by ‘family’?

However you want to define family! To you, it might mean your partner or spouse, your children, your chosen family, or something else. We acknowledge that the important people you share your life with doesn’t look the same for everyone.

What if my family members don’t live at the same address?

That’s fine! You’ll be able to mark whether you want your membership cards to come to one address or different ones. You can also choose if you want one family membership card or individual ones for each person.

Are you going to use my children’s names?

We’d love to send your children “Junior WABA Members” cards, but it’s up to you! We will ask for their ages.

If I’m currently a member, can I still sign up?

Yes! Your membership will be transferred to your family membership with an updated expiration date—one year after your family’s primary contact’s current membership is due to expire. For example, if your current membership is set to expire on 10/1/2021 and you purchase a family membership, your family membership will expire on 10/1/2022 for every person receiving a new card.

I have more questions or comments.

Drop us a line at membership@waba.org and we’ll sort it out! This is new for us, too, so we want to hear from you.

It’s the Membership Drive!

Meet Hannah Anderson-Dana, our new Membership and Development Coordinator.

I’m Hannah Anderson-Dana, the new Membership and Development Coordinator at WABA. I’m so excited to be part of the Development team and get to know our great members! Growing up in the very bike friendly Portland, OR and attending college in the equally bikeable Twin Cities meant that biking was my main form of transportation, from getting to school to riding around the lakes on a nice day. After I moved to DC, I joined WABA as a member on Bike to Work Day in 2015 and I’ve had the best time learning about the bike community in the region and exploring different neighborhoods on rides. Exploring DC by bike made the city really feel like home! I most recently worked at a civics non-profit, where I was always trying to convince my coworkers to bike to work or on the weekends. Needless to say, that’s taken care of at WABA! I hope to enhance and expand WABA’s already amazing membership program and to continue making connections in our community through biking. If you have thoughts or feedback about our membership program and how we can grow it, please reach out to me at hannah.anderson-dana@waba.org. I can’t wait to meet you!
