If you answered “no” to any of the above questions, then a Learn to Ride or a Basic Skills Clinic is best for you.

  • Questions! We love them! Do you have a particular bike situation you’ve always wondered about? That’s what we’re here for.
  • A bike, helmet, water and a snack.
  • Flat pedals. Toe clips, clipless pedals, or other gizmos that attach your feet to your pedals aren’t recommended. If you don’t know what this means, your pedals will work fine.

Sweeten up your afternoon with a family-friendly ride in Old Town Alexandria. Come enjoy the nice weather and extra hours of summer lighting with WABA. Our casual, conversation pace ride will help you satisfy your sweet tooth, whether you are craving ice cream, cupcakes, donuts, or chocolate (or all of the above!).

Our community education ride series is an inclusive space for riders of varying experience and confidence. You will always have a great time on our rides, but they’re also a safe space to ask questions and practice to make this summer’s riding a breeze.

Please bring your own bike and helmet. Helmets are a requirement on all WABA rides. If you have questions, please read our ride policies here. Everyone ages 14 and up is welcome. All riders must sign a waiver. Riders under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

This class is intended for native Spanish speakers. WABA will have additional Learn to Ride classes this summer and fall.

Nuestros instructores llevan a los estudiantes a un plan de estudios progresivo, con el objetivo de montar con dos pedales al final de la sesión.

Basic Skills Clinic

Register Cost Location

The Skills Clinic is for students who have graduated to 2-pedal riding, but need or want to continue working on their riding skills. Instructors will assist students with drills such as starting, stopping, turning, weaving, and gradual braking.

Come join us and start working on your skills in a few easy steps:

  1. Sign-up for free here;
  2. Ensure your helmet and bike are in good working order. You can also use a Capital Bikeshare bike and we’ll reimburse your usage fees;
  3. If you’re unable to bring your own bike, e-mail us at education@waba.org or call 202-518-0524, x221 at least 48-hours before the clinic and we’ll provide a bike and helmet for you;
  4. Arrive promptly at 10:00 AM and check-in with the Lead Instructor.
  5. Be patient and wait a few minutes until after the break when the Skills Clinic portion of the class begins, then have fun practicing your skills and ask questions!

Adult Learn to Ride

Our Learn to Ride class is fun, intuitive, and very successful! This class is for adults who have never ridden a bike before or have tried to learn and have not been successful. Our League certified instructors take students through a progressive curriculum, with the goal of riding with two pedals by the end of the session.

Our approach is fun and intuitive, but it also requires hard work. You will be riding for nearly three hours. We take breaks every hour. This class is for you if:

  • You are at least 18 years old;
  • You have never tried to learn how to ride a bike; or
  • You have tried to learn and have not been successful.

A rental bike and helmet for the day are included with your registration. Be sure to provide your height in feet and inches so that we can provide you with a bicycle that fits you.

Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring the following: water, snacks, and weather-appropriate outerwear.

Only students who have reserved space in the class may attend. Unfortunately, walk-up students cannot be accommodated.

Learn how to ride confidently in the city

Our Confident City Cycling classes are a great way to learn new bike handling tips and tricks to boost your joy, confidence, and comfort. These classes are fun, encouraging, and a safe place to learn and to get answers for all of your bicycling questions. The three-hour class culminates in a short ride to learn how to ride in different road, bike lane, and trail situations.

Explore and build community

If you are new to the neighborhood or looking for a new adventure around town, our Community Rides are a great opportunity to explore new parts or the region on bike. This spring, we’ll explore tasty desserts, art, farmers markets, and highlight new bicycle infrastructure. Our rides are led by our league certified instructors and are always a good time and a safe and inclusive space to explore and ask questions.

NEW: Commuting Education Rides

New this spring, our ride series will help you learn how to commute by bike during the upcoming metro shutdown in Alexandria, Virginia. Check the schedule for commuting options that will help you connect to trails to get to the Metro or into Downtown DC.

Learn to ride!

Feel like you’re missing out on all the fun on two wheels? WABA’s Learn to Ride classes are just the place for you! You’ll be on a bike by the end of our three-hour class with the help of our excellent and encouraging certified instructors. The registration fee is $85 and includes a bike and helmet rental. Our local government partners also offer $10 classes for their residents. The demand for these classes is very high, so sign up soon!

Also new this spring, we are introducing our Basic Skills Clinic for folks who already took a Learn to Ride Class in previous seasons or know how to balance on a bike but haven’t had the opportunity to keep practicing their fundamental skills. Skills Clinics will be run in conjunction with other classes, allowing students to move up as they progress. A limited number of bikes and helmet rentals are available, so we encourage you to bring your own bike and helmet and sign up soon!

Adult Learn to Ride at Port City Brewing

Let’s Try it by Bike! Surviving this summer’s Blue and Yellow Line Shutdown

The summer 2019 Yellow and Blue Line shutdown is coming and roads in northern Virginia are going to be packed! Bypass the car traffic by riding your bike to work. Or go multimodal and bike to the Crystal City Metro and take your bike to work on metro.

Whether you have always wanted to commute by bike or you are just exploring the idea now, our community education ride series is an inclusive space for riders. You will always have a great time on our rides, but they’re also a safe space to ask questions and practice to make this summer’s commute a breeze.

We will showcase the roads and trails in Alexandria that will get you to the Crystal City Metro for your metro ride and, as you build momentum, all the way into Washington, DC.
