Sunshine and PB&Js: 50 States 2019 Recap

Hundreds of bicyclists came out on Saturday, September 7th for WABA’s annual 50 States Ride. We saw a burley-bound baby along for the Route 66 Ride, a couple tackling the 50 States in matching jerseys, and 13 Colonies riders rolling out together by the dozen from Walter Pierce Park. Whether this was your first 50 States Ride or your tenth: it was awesome to see you all bright and early to celebrate bicycling in D.C.

The day was clear and warm— a great day for a bike ride! Volunteer-made PBJs kept bellies full and pedals pumping at our Eastern Market pit stop, and the WABA Boutique at the Mellow Mushroom post-ride celebration had plenty of shirts, socks, and jerseys for sale so riders could show their WABA pride. Thanks to the sunshine, the roofdeck filled up quickly, and 18th Street felt even more festive than usual as rider after rider rolled up to the finish line looking for their hard-earned pizza and beer.

Thank you so much to all of you who came out for the ride. Like all of WABA’s signature events, the 50 States Ride is a fundraising event. Your registration fees fund WABA’s mission of making sure there are safe, accessible places to bicycle across the region. We’re grateful for your support, and I hope I’ll see you at our next signature event, Cider Ride, on November 2.

Check out the photos below for a glimpse of the 2019 50 States Ride —but first, one last thank you to the sponsors whose support made the 50 States Ride possible:

The 50 States and 13 Colonies rides are WABA’s signature events: The former is a grueling—but fascinating—trek through all of D.C.’s 50 state-named streets, while the latter is a more relaxed exploration. Before we present a full recap of the event, we wanted to share with you some photos we and others snapped this past Saturday. 2013 50 States Ride If you took photos at 50 States or the afterparty, please add them to our Flickr pool, where you can find tons and tons of great photos from the event! Desperately Seeking 50 States Volunteers!

IMG_3482 We need your help to pull off our signature event, the 50 States and 13 Colonies ride. It’s this Saturday, Sept. 21. We’ve got an awesome corps of helping hands for our lunch pit stop at Eastern Market, but there are other locations that need attention. We need volunteers to sign up to help us work the start location in Adams Morgan, pit stops in various places around the city (there’s probably one near your house!), and the after party at Mellow Mushroom on 18th Street in Adams Morgan (who doesn’t like a good party?). Please consider volunteering to help us make this event happen. More information and sign up to volunteer here.

Volunteer for 50 States!

Our signature ride event of the year, the 50 States and 13 Colonies ride, is on Sat., Sept. 21, and we need your help to pull it off. Please consider volunteering for one (or several!) of the opportunities below. WABA is grateful to have such amazing volunteers like you who make our events the best they can be. 1. 50 States Prep Volunteer Night: this Wednesday, Sept 11th from 6:30-8:30pm We need your help to get ready for 50 States! Do you have an eye for detail and can help mark an intricate route on huge D.C. bike maps? Are you handy at clipping, crafting, painting, and assembling? Maybe you’re just a fan of bicycling and meeting fellow volunteers. Either way, prepping for 50 States requires all hands on deck. Come to the WABA office (2599 Ontario Road) on Wed., Sept. 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. We’ll give you beer and snacks, and you’ll have a great time—promise! Please RSVP here. IMG_3787 2. Join the WABA Street Team! For the first time ever, WABA is getting together a street team. Its first mission: hanging posters for the 50 States afterparty all over town. We are looking for people who can help us spread the word about future WABA events and happenings. We want you to hang posters every which way, flood your social networks with information about future WABA happenings, and more. You’ll get special access to future WABA events (remember: our awesome rides always sell out), and can expect to meet your fellow street-team volunteers at happy hours. Interested? Sign up here. We’ll be releasing street team members on their first mission this week, so plan to be available right away! After Party 3. Help us run the 50 States event itself! Volunteer at one of the pit stops or the after party: We are seeking friendly, fun loving, and adventurous volunteers who can work the start location of the ride, a pit stop along the way, or help make the after party an event to remember! Volunteer opportunities are all on Sat., Sept. 21, and times and locations around D.C. vary. Get more info and sign up here. CIMG0902 4. Didn’t get the chance to sign up for the 50 States ride? Remember, it’s sold out. But if you qualify to be a ride marshal—commit to following all traffic laws, will lead a group to navigate the ride, know how to fix a flat, and can help other riders in the event of an accident—sign up to marshal the ride and get your cue sheet, T-shirt, and lunch for free. This is a challenging, long, tiring 65-mile ride so you must have experience with that kind of distance. More information and sign-up forms can be found here.

50 States and 13 Colonies Registration Open to Public Today

IMG_3498 Want to ride the 50 States, our notoriously brutal (but fun, and awesome, and rewarding!) course around the entirety of Washington, D.C.’s state streets? Tickets are on sale to the general public today for the ride, which is on Sat., Sept. 21. We also offer the 13 Colonies ride for those looking for a slower-paced, more relaxed tour of the city. For more information about the rides, see this page. To register, go here. If you miss your chance to register for the 50 States or 13 Colonies this year, remember that WABA members get early access to registration for our events. Become a member today to support our advocacy work and attend our events. And join us for the afterparty! This year, we’re opening the 50 States afterparty to riders and nonriders alike. We’ll have two floors of Mellow Mushroom reserved for feting the 50 States riders. Join us and New Belgium Brewing from 2-6 p.m. on Sept. 21 for beer and food specials. Want to volunteer for the 50 States and 13 Colonies? If you’re a confident cyclist who has experience riding long routes (60-plus miles for 50 States or 15-plus miles for 13 Colonies), consider marshaling! We also need help at the ride start, its four pit stops, and the afterparty.
