Bike to Explore Day

Biking allows us to go places and see sights that are impossible for vehicles to reach. This is a day to use your bike to explore your block, your neighborhood, your city, and the amazing outdoor spaces all across the region. One of the best ways to explore is by biking on one of the many trails in the region. Know your Trail Basics and then get out to Explore our Regional Trails!

If you’re biking to explore nature, maybe to identify some trees or go bird watching, some of our favorites are the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail, the Sligo Creek Trail, or Mount Vernon Trail. You can see all our region’s trails—existing and planned—mapped out here. You might be surprised where you’ll find little pockets of nature in our region!

Register for Bike to Anywhere Week now to receive your BINGO card full of fun activities for both on and off the bike.

We love nature pictures at WABA and want to see where you explored! Keep us updated with your bike adventures and BINGO card activities by using #BikeAnywhere or by tagging @wabadc on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Got a question? Drop a line at membership@waba.org.

Bike to Help Someone Who Needs It Day

Here at WABA, biking is not only about getting around, it’s about being a part of a community. This is a day set aside for doing something for someone else, whether that be running an errand, teaching them how to bike, or just spending quality time with them!

Volunteering is a great way to help others in your community. Did you know that volunteering (for WABA or any other mutual aid/charity/non-profit organization) can get you a FREE WABA membership? You can check out some organizations WABA staff really love here, all of which are on the front lines of pandemic support.

At WABA, we’re committed to being better community members, too. We publicly declared our support for Black Lives last summer, and continue to collect materials for ongoing, intentional antiracism education here. Join us in understanding how biking and bike advocacy play a role in an inclusive, safe community.

Bike to Work Day

Bike to Work Day logo

Join WABA and Commuter Connections for the region’s 20th Anniversary Bike to Work Day. Even if you’ll still be working from home in May, get some fresh air by biking to a T-shirt Pickup Point (formerly known as pit stops) and then back home to work for the day. The first 15,000 who register and arrive at a pit stop by bike receive a FREE T-shirt. Staggered hours and a strict COVID policy will be in place.

Important note: signing up for Bike to Anywhere Week does not register you for Bike to Work Day. They are separate events, and we’re excited to celebrate them both.

Bike to “Adult” Day

Going grocery shopping, stopping at the bank, picking up prescriptions…some errands are… unavoidable. Make “adulting” more bearable by using a bike to get there! Are you carrying something, like groceries, on your bike? Read about the best ways to carry items on your bike and, if you need to combine a bus or Metro ride with your trip, how biking and public transportation can go hand and hand.

One of our favorite play activities to do outdoors is riding an ebike! Capital Bikeshare has ebikes available all over the region. Download the Capital Bikeshare app to find an ebike available near you, which you can rent in 30 minute increments for only $1 to unlock! Here is some information on how to get started on an ebike and how to safely ebike in a city

You know what else is fun? Bike tricks! Here is a two-part lesson (part 1, part 2) from our in-house expert on how to do a wheelie!

Did you know that WABA has youth education options to get the kiddos in your life riding? Sign up for Bike to Anywhere Week and join WABA today and help our programs reach further.

We want to see your wheelie videos! Keep us updated with your bike adventures and BINGO card activities by using #BikeAnywhere or by tagging @wabadc on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Got a question? Drop a line at membership@waba.org.

Bike to Learn Day

Bike to Learn Day

Today is the day to hop on your bike and learn something. This could come in many COVID-safe forms: biking to school, to a museum, to read a book, or to finally reading all the historical markers in your neighborhood. Or maybe you’re biking to learn how to ride confidently, to help a friend learn, or staying home to learn more online—you choose in which ways you can learn! Interested in reading more about bicycling? Here is a list of book suggestions!

At WABA, we believe that it is important to learn about how the built environment—our streets, neighborhoods, and cities—around us benefits some communities over others. Communities of color suffer disproportionate burdens from inadequate transportation infrastructure and the direct effects of climate change. Visit waba.org/antiracism to find resources on how to promote justice with the changes to the transportation system that we seek to create.

Or, if you want to learn a technical skill, did you know that our biking classes are free for all members? You can find more information on our Member Extras here, and when you’re ready, sign up for Bike Anywhere Week!

We want to know what you learned today! Keep us updated with your bike adventures and BINGO card activities by using #BikeAnywhere or by tagging @wabadc on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. Got a question? Drop a line at membership@waba.org.

If you’re not a bike owner—and you don’t need to be one to participate!—Capital Bikeshare is a great, affordable option. Check out some videos we made with them to learn how the system works.

Have you heard about the ABC quick check? It is an easy-to-remember, fast way to make sure your bike is ready to go every time you ride. It helps you identify upfront things that could be inconvenient problems if they crop up while you’re riding. Good news— we have a video to teach you how to do an ABC quick check!
