Safe Streets for Ward 5 Monthly Meeting

Safe Streets for Ward 5 is a group of neighbors working together for safer streets, protected bike lanes, and more options for getting around Ward 5 without a car. Join us at our next monthly meeting, learn about our priorities, and get involved!

This group is doing it’s part to support WABA’s 20×20 campaign to build 20 new miles of connected, protected, and equitable bike lanes in DC. In Ward 5, we are working to support protected bike lanes on 8th St. NE, West Virginia Ave, Montana Ave, and Lincoln Rd. NE.

You don’t need to ride a bike, you don’t need to be a traffic engineer, and you don’t need to be political. No matter your schedule and no matter your background, you have a role to play in winning safe streets across DC. We hope you can join us!

Ward 7 Protected Bike Lanes Meeting

Join WABA’s Ward 7 Action Group to talk organizing strategy around the 20×20 Campaign. We’ll dig into projects and plan our next activities.

Let’s get to work for better biking in Ward 7!

Protected Bike Lanes on Fenton Street!

John the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, WABA’s Montgomery County Action Committee and your Silver Spring neighbors for a community meeting about three efforts to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety along Fenton Street and in Silver Spring. MCDOT staff will share details and collect feedback on:

  • Fenton Street protected bike lane study
  • Grove Street neighborhood greenway
  • Fenton and Burlington Ave intersection safety improvements

Since 2017, protected bike lanes have sprouted around downtown Silver Spring, making it easier and safer than ever to get around by bike. The Silver Spring Circle, a network of protected bike lanes around and through the core, is nearly complete, offering low-stress bicycle connections to many of the places people want to go. The last key piece of this bicycle network is a new protected bike lane on Fenton Street.

This transformation was possible thanks to the broad, enthusiastic support from people who live, work, and travel through Silver Spring. Please attend the meeting, add your support, and help make sure these projects make Fenton Street a safe and inviting place to bike and walk with thriving local businesses.

Getting There:
East Silver Spring Elementary School is just a few blocks from Fenton Street and easily accessible by bike, Capital Bikeshare and multiple bus lines.

Community Listening Session – East

What makes it hard to get where you’re going in your neighborhood? Missing crosswalks? Speeding Maryland drivers? Buses stuck in traffic?

You know better than anyone where the trouble spots are—come talk to us about it.

We’ll have representatives from the District Department of Transportation, DC Council staff, and a variety of community organizations on hand to listen, answer questions, and engage with your thoughts on how to make streets safer for everyone from toddlers to grandparents.

Bring your ideas, your questions, and your friends.

The challenges and solutions discussed will be presented at the Washington Region Vision Zero Summit on Thursday, March 19th, 2020. We hope to create a direct line for your concerns to 300 key transportation decision-makers from DC and region-wide.

Refreshments will be provided.

This event is primarily focused on DC residents of Wards 7 and 8. If you don’t live in either of those Wards, sign up for this Community Listening Session on Monday, February 10th, 2020.
