Advocacy

Since 1972 the Washington Area Bicyclist Association has been fighting hard to ensure that you can ride wherever you want to go safely.  Can you imagine what the Washington region would be like without things like the Capital Crescent Trail, Beach Drive on the weekends or bike access on Metrorail and bus?  It's scary to think about how our region might have developed without an organization dedicated to making sure that biking and walking were part of the transportation solution.  Please see below for a list of our current priorities, our goals for the organization and our historic victories.  For more specific information about our goals for biking where you live, check out the individual pages under the advocacy tab to the left.

Current Campaigns

Current Priorities

  • Complete Streets policies in Montgomery County, MD
  • Construction of the Metropolitan Branch Trail and Anacostia Riverwalk Trail
  • Increase miles of bike lanes striped across region
  • Increase mile of dedicated bicycle facilities (cycletracks, multi-use paths, etc.) throughout the region
  • Promote regional bike sharing services
  • Reconstruction and widening of the Rock Creek Trail
  • A Bike Coordinator for Prince George's County, MD
  • Protect the Custis Trail from the widening of I-66
  • Improve training of police officers and bus drivers
  • Improve enforcement of current traffic and bicycling laws by police officers
  • Expand bike safety programs in DC, Northern Virginia & Maryland

Historic Victories

  • Weekend Car-Free Beach Drive in Rock Creek Park
  • Instigation of the Capital Crescent Trail
  • Bike Plans for DC, Arlington, Montgomery County
  • Advocated for Bike Coordinators in DC and Fairfax County
  • Bike Racks on Metrobuses
  • Eliminated the pass requirement and expanded hours of access for bikes on Metrorail.
  • Eliminated bike registration requirement in DC
  • Expanded bike parking requirements in DC commercial buildings

Arlington County Bicycle Advisory Committee

The Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee holds regular meetings open to the public on the first Monday of the month. The meetings are held at Court House Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd. in the lobby meeting rooms (A,B,C, or D) beginning at 7:30 PM. Bring your bikes inside.

Bike Arlington

BikeArlington is a program of Arlington County Commuter Services, within the Department of Environmental Services. BikeArlington is an effort to build on an existing partnership between Arlington citizens, businesses and County staff to encourage more people to bike more often.
