Show your support for bike lanes on Missouri Ave. NW and 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan!

Let’s open with 3 positive points advanced by community energy and advocacy: 1) DDOT is starting construction on 11th St. NW protected bike lanes, 2) the DC Council’s Committee on Transportation and Environment has recommended earmarked FY27 funding for 11th St. SE protected bike lanes, and 3) this year’s DC Public Schools-DC Bike Ride organized Graduation on Wheels gave new bikes to 300 DCPS 2nd graders in Wards 7 & 8, as a capstone to the Bike to the Park program DCPS launched in 2015.

Otherwise, near-term, it is crucial to show support for the possible new bike lanes on 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan and for the Missouri Avenue NW Trail Connection Project.

Here’s what’s going on and how to support…

DDOT’s Plans for 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan

DDOT radically reworked DC’s Streatery Program last fall, with the result that no streateries remain on 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan. But could the thin silver lining of the streateries’ demise – a loss for “public space activation” – be a plus for bikeability? DDOT recently presented an 18th Street NW Restriping Plan with two alternative designs: a wide hardscape median or bike lanes. Naturally we favor bike lanes!

Please share your thoughts with DDOT, via their 18th Street NW Design Alternatives Survey. It should only take about 3 minutes to add a comment! We suggest a comment along the lines “I support bike lanes on 18th St. NW, however they should be fully protected in accordance with moveDC standards for arterials such as 18th St. NW. As an alternative, please consider converting 18th St. NW between Kalorama Road NW and Columbia Road NW into a pedestrian space with other access limited to transit, delivery vehicles, emergency responders, handicapped drop-off and pick-up, and bikes and scooters.”

The Missouri Avenue NW Trail Connection Project

DDOT and the National Park Service have been working for years to develop a safe bike route across Rock Creek Park, running alongside Military Road NW. Visit the Military Road Trail Feasibility Study page for background. The trail would connect to DC’s east-of-Rock Creek trail network via a Missouri Avenue NW Trail Connection… we hope. This three-block connector is facing neighborhood complaints about loss of parking, even though every one of the fourteen houses along that stretch has a garage and off-street parking.

Please send a message to bike.lanes@dc.gov and christian.pineiro@dc.gov stating that you support the Missouri Avenue NW Trail Connection Project, and attend the public meeting on the Missouri Avenue NW Trail Connection Project, Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 6 to 8 pm at the Emery Heights Community Center at 5701 Georgia Ave NW, Washington, DC. Here’s the meeting notice. Strong turnout will make a difference. This is a safety project, and we need to show up.

Bike lanes are most effective when they connects to other bike lanes, protected bike lanes, even more so.

WABA works with teams of grassroots volunteers across the District to demand a network of low-stress places to bike. A network where you, your kids, nephews, nieces, or grandkids, can all get where you need to go safely, easily, happily on bikes.

More about Complete Streets

Complete Streets are streets designed to accommodate all users, and that prioritize historically underinvested modes of transportation like transit, walking, and biking. An incomplete street might lack adequate sidewalks, low-stress bike infrastructure, or safe and comfortable access to transit.

Effective Complete Streets policies change the way a jurisdiction plans and builds transportation infrastructure—sidewalks, low stress bike infrastructure, and transit should be included in any new or rebuilt street by default, rather than as an add-on when there's space or demand.

While most regional jurisdictions have a Complete Streets policy of some sort, they lack teeth and permit transportation departments to continue to build streets that put cars first and squeeze other modes into the margins.
