For the past three years, WABA has received a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office to organize an internship program for high school students in Prince George’s County. The students research a transportation issue impacting their community, receive development training from professionals in the industry, organize community walk audits in order to survey and educate their peers, create their own Ted Talk style presentations about their research projects in order to present them at a one day conference for other Prince George’s County high school students to learn about safe streets and community advocacy.
Students also learn to ride bikes safely on the roadways by participating in one of WABA’s teen learn to ride or road cycling basics classes.
This successful program is now being replicated in DC in collaboration with the DC Highway Safety Office. 7 students from DC Public Schools will be chosen to participate in the first year’s internship program. Both cohorts will collaborate and have opportunities to learn from one another while developing their research projects and events for the year.
The application for both internships are live, and will close on September 7th, 2026. Please share the applications with youth in your networks. The Education team will share updates on the youths’ progress in upcoming newsletters.
