Show up today to help us save the 15th Street Bike Lane! The future of the bike lane is still uncertain as we await the judge’s decision in our case against the federal government. It’s crucial that we show how vital this bike lane is.
The feds said they wouldn’t start tearing out the bike lane until April 23rd, but signs warning of “paving on 15th St on or around 4/23/26” went up last week— an indication that the feds are planning to begin removal even with the judge’s decision still pending. But we’re not giving up. We’re fired up and we’re going to keep fighting with you at our sides: for better bicycling and for safer streets.
Meet at the Washington Monument on Tuesday, April 21st, at 5pm for a rally and ride. The plan? Show up. Get loud. Ride in solidarity.
Despite the documented safety improvements from the project (91% decrease in bike injuries! 46% decrease in ALL crashes!), not to mention faster driving times, the National Park Service and Federal Highway Administration are moving to rip out the 15th Street NW/SW section along the National Mall. This is a critical connection between Virginia and DC, and a key link in the 15th St bike lane corridor that continues into northwest DC.
WABA is leading a national day of action in partnership with the League of American Bicyclists, with other rallies across the country from Hawai’i to Colorado to Missouri. What happens here signals what the federal government is willing to do to bike infrastructure everywhere. With more than 1,100 bicyclist fatalities in 2024 alone, we can’t afford to strip back safety infrastructure in our community or anywhere else.
See you tomorrow! Clever signs and noise-makers encouraged.
