Hains Point Hoopla 3.0

Join us for another rally to protect Hains Point on Sunday, October 4th! The Hains Point Hoopla 3.0 will have two elements: a demonstration bike ride and a rally!

Part 1: 9:00am – Meet at West Potomac Park near Field #4. From there, the group will bike slowly with the DC Activist Street Band about 3-miles to Hains Point [optional].
Part 2: 10:00am – Meet at Hains Point in East Potomac Park for a brief rally featuring remarks from Davey Hearn, 3x former Olympian accused of vandalizing the reflecting pool and DC At-Large Councilmember Robert White.

We’re coming together to demonstrate our support for the park, to call for accountability and transparency, and to show solidarity between all park visitors.

The future of Hains Point at East Potomac Park is still uncertain. Rumors have swirled for months about the potential imminent redevelopment of the East Potomac Golf Links that could take over the public space around East Potomac Park– the beloved destination for picnic go-ers, cyclists, walkers, runners, birdwatchers, anglers, and more.

We’re holding the line: Hains Point should be for people! We need a future for the park that continues to support all visitors who enjoy the public space.

When & Where:

Part 1: 9:00am – Meet at West Potomac Park near Field #4. From there, the group will bike slowly with the DC Activist Street Band about 2.5-miles to Hains Point [optional].

Part 2: 10:00am – Rally at Hains Point in East Potomac Park
- The rally will take place in the field adjacent to Ohio Drive just past the entrance to the parking lot for the picnic area.

Hains Point Mixed-Use Field

Restrooms are located less than half a mile from the event site at the picnic area.
The event site is located approximately 1.75 miles from the park entrance.
To get there, follow Ohio Drive SW past Buckeye Drive, the golf course entrance/parking lot, and just past the entrance to the picnic area.
Look for WABA tents!
If you’ve gone around the turn at the point, you’ve gone too far!
There is a water fountain directly adjacent to the event site.

Bike lanes are most effective when they connects to other bike lanes, protected bike lanes, even more so.

WABA works with teams of grassroots volunteers across the District to demand a network of low-stress places to bike. A network where you, your kids, nephews, nieces, or grandkids, can all get where you need to go safely, easily, happily on bikes.

Complete Streets are streets designed to accommodate all users, and that prioritize historically underinvested modes of transportation like transit, walking, and biking. An incomplete street might lack adequate sidewalks, low-stress bike infrastructure, or safe and comfortable access to transit.

Effective Complete Streets policies change the way a jurisdiction plans and builds transportation infrastructure—sidewalks, low stress bike infrastructure, and transit should be included in any new or rebuilt street by default, rather than as an add-on when there's space or demand.

While most regional jurisdictions have a Complete Streets policy of some sort, they lack teeth and permit transportation departments to continue to build streets that put cars first and squeeze other modes into the margins.
