Please join WABA for a Maryland bicycling advocates meetup on March 4, with two special guests: Deron Lovaas, MDOT’s Chief of Environment & Sustainable Transportation, and Christina Whitehouse, Bike Lane Uprising founder, who’ll be visiting from Chicago.
We’ll meet at Proteus Bicycles in College Park on Wednesday, March 4 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. WABA will provide food and drinks. You’ll supply the questions for Deron and Christina and, we expect, be inspired by their work. We at WABA are!
Our program will start around 5:45 pm with social time before and after. Please register so that we know you’re coming.
Deron Lovaas leads a team of 20 people in the Maryland Transportation Secretary’s Office (TSO), focusing on climate pollution mitigation and resilience, active transportation, vehicle electrification, and environmental compliance and innovation. Deron’s active-transportation portfolio includes MDOT’s bikeways team. Deron will speak starting around 6:30 pm and then field questions.
Christina Whitehouse founded Bike Lane Uprising in Chicago in 2017, to make it easy for anyone to report bike lane obstructions. BLU analyzes the data to highlight problem locations and high-risk carriers (trucks). The aim is to hold repeat violators accountable and boost safety; BLU plans to expand their audit work nation-wide. BLU has innovated in other ways such as launching a driver-certification course for companies with fleet drivers. There’s a lot we can learn and apply locally, here in the DMV!
