Alexandria wants to make Braddock Road safer for people walking and biking, including children walking and biking to school, and people connecting to Metro, area trails, retail and services. The city’s Traffic and Parking Board (T&PB) will hold a public hearing and vote on the recommended design Monday, February 23. Please consider speaking up in support of these needed improvements. Speak up at the TPB hearing on February 23rd in support of the project
- Virtual – Attend the public hearing via Zoom and speak during the public comment period for this item; or
- In-Person – Attend the public hearing in person and sign up to speak during the public comment period for this item. The hearing is 7PM on February 23rd at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center, Room 1305, 4850 Mark Center Drive, Alexandria, VA.

The Braddock Road Trail Access and Corridor Improvements project will improve safety and access between Russell Road and North West Street for all road users – people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving. This is a chance to fix dangerous conditions and provide a more connected and safer corridor for everyone.

The recommended design will:

Create safer crosswalks at intersections with shorter crossing distances.
Install a two-way bike lane that connects the Braddock Road Metro Station, the Potomac Yard Trail, and the Metro Linear Trail (Braddock Rd to Cameron/King St).
Ensure continuous bike lanes between West Street and Russell Road, filling a crucial gap in the city’s bicycle network.
Advance Alexandria’s Mobility Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan.

More about Alexandria Complete Streets

Alexandria’s Complete Streets Policy requires that people walking, biking, and taking transit are considered in street design and operation and tha the City work to make streets safer and more comfortable for all users. Complete streets are a core part of the Alexandria Mobility Plan (AMP) that was adopted in 2021 to guide the development of the city’s transportation system.

Complete Streets are streets designed to accommodate all users, and that prioritize historically underinvested modes of transportation like transit, walking, and biking. An incomplete street might lack adequate sidewalks, low-stress bike infrastructure, or safe and comfortable access to transit.

Effective Complete Streets policies change the way a jurisdiction plans and builds transportation infrastructure—sidewalks, low stress bike infrastructure, and transit should be included in any new or rebuilt street by default, rather than as an add-on when there's space or demand.

While most regional jurisdictions have a Complete Streets policy of some sort, they lack teeth and permit transportation departments to continue to build streets that put cars first and squeeze other modes into the margins.
