Have you ever walked or biked on the Suitland Parkway Trail? If so, you know it’s currently an unwelcoming place to ride or walk: the trail is bumpy, unprotected from fast moving vehicles, and there aren’t easy ways to get to or off the trail. Many folks avoid using the trail when possible because it doesn’t feel safe. Want to do something about it? Weigh in on the proposed concepts for trail rehab and improvements from the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) by Friday, March 31st.

DDOT reviewed the concept engineering for the rehabilitation of the Suitland Parkway Trail, which is a 1.7-mile paved trail that runs along Suitland Parkway from Pomeroy Road SE to Southern Avenue, in a public meeting on February 15th. See the slides here and watch video of the presentation here.
They shared their early concepts to rehabilitate the trail include re-paving and widening, rerouting the trail away from the roadway or adding a crash barrier between the trail and the roadway, adding trail and street lights, and adding more connections to the trail from neighborhood streets. Ultimately, as part of another project, the trail will connect to the new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and the Anacostia River Trail. This is early in the process to improve the trail so this is the time to list our big ideas and to call for what we want to see.

As you respond to the survey, we encourage you to think about what you’d like to see related to:
- Safety considerations for all trail users
- Intersections and roadway crossings
- Connections to surrounding communities and neighborhoods
- Trail signage and amenities
- Trail maintenance and management
The next steps in the process are to collect feedback from stakeholders and the public, begin conceptual development, complete an environmental review, and conduct additional public involvement before the trail concept is finalized.
