Red Line Rides: Bike Commuting during the Red Line Shutdown (and Beyond)

This action is no longer active. Please visit our action center for current actions you can take.

WABA is scheduling Red Line Rides for experienced and would-be bike commuters, along the closed Metrorail Red Line stretch, between Glenmont and Fort Totten. Our aim is to help connect community members interested in bike commuting, especially those who may be hesitant to ride alone. If you haven’t yet responded via our interest form, please do that now at https://forms.gle/CgbjDMZmUFRkyQ6dA.

We’ve moved from scheduled rides to an on-demand/by-request model. If you’d like to try out bike commuting and would like a guide, please get in touch at RedLineRides@waba.org.

We’ll try to connect you, whether for a morning or afternoon ride, for a Wheaton, Forest Glen, Silver Spring, or Takoma start/end point and a route to or from the Metropolitan Branch Trail (MBT) in Fort Totten, Rock Creek Park, or mid-town (let’s call it) via Kansas Ave. NW and 14th Street or a parallel route. Start times can range from 7 am to 8:30 am and 4 pm to 5:30 pm.

We will ride on streets with modest traffic volumes and on trails, keeping all the riders who participate together.

A reminder, whether or not you bike commute: Capital Bikeshare is an excellent option for short and medium-distance trips.

Capital Bikeshare is an option, including e-bikes. There are stations in and around downtown Wheaton and downtown Silver Spring, and at the Takoma Metro station and downtown Takoma Park. Check out the online system map. From Silver Spring or Takoma, or can ride south into DC; west to Chevy Chase, Bethesda, and upper Northwest; and east into Prince George’s County. And e-bikes are an option for just $0.15/min extra.

Note that Capital Bikeshare offers free annual memberships for qualified individuals in Montgomery County and $5 memberships for qualifying residents outside the county. You must be 16 or older in a household receiving SNAP, WIC, TANF, SSI/SSDI, LIHEAP, Veterans disability (60%+), or Medicaid assistance.

Happy riding!
