WABA Announces the Bega Memorial Fund for Bicycling Safety

WABA is grateful to announce new funding from Shawn Blumenfeld’s family to establish the Bega Memorial Fund for Bicycling Safety.

Known as “Bega” in the bicycling community, Shawn was struck and killed by a motorist in March 2022 in Frederick County, MD, while doing what he loved: biking.

Messenger, mechanic, racer, team manager, event promoter, coach – Shawn did everything there was to do in cycling.  He was an enthusiastic supporter of all bicyclists, whether they were professional or recreational riders, and a tireless advocate for bike safety.

The Bega Fund will bring new bike education classes to Prince George’s County and support WABA’s advocacy work for safer streets in Maryland.

WABA is  humbled and honored to play a part in remembering Shawn Blumenfeld, as we work to make the DC region a place where people of all ages can ride safely.

WABA and Shawn’s family welcome contributions to the Bega Memorial Fund. To make a gift to the fund, you can either:
